High potential and gifted education
Some students demonstrate advanced learning capabilities, quickly grasping new concepts and excelling in areas such as creativity, critical thinking, leadership, or athletics.
We are committed to nurturing these advanced learners by providing tailored support and enriching opportunities that foster growth across the four domains of high potential and gifted education: intellectual, creative, physical, and social-emotional.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students participate in a wide range of experiences with students from other local schools and state-wide opportunities which extend and enrich their potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Crossmaglen Public School, HPGE is fully integrated into daily learning. Students demonstrating high potential are supported and nurtured to further extend their learning through:
- Differentiated tasks and explicit questioning that adjust pace, complexity and higher-order thinking.
- Formative assessment to monitor growth and adapt learning.
- Explicit teaching of problem-solving strategies.
- Teacher identified student learning needs in the classroom and use of evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students.
- Point of need teaching to provide learning pathways, including enrichment, extension and acceleration.
- Our supportive classroom environments that promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and perseverance.
- Teacher engagement in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
- Supportive learning environments that enable exploration and self-assessment.
Our students have opportunities to develop their potential in all areas:
- STEM and coding lessons
- Visual arts showcases and music performances
- Sport with qualified sports coaches
- Kids in the Kitchen and sustainability
- Student leadership opportunities
- Participation in whole-school inclusion and wellbeing initiatives
In collaboration with other local schools and state-wide opportunities to ensure student potential is recognised and extended:
- Our partnerships with RROC and the Bongil Bongil community of schools provides opportunities for our students to take part in a range of academic, creative and sporting opportunities with students from other local primary schools, enabling talents to be recognised and celebrated.
- The Representative School Sport Pathway and Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering commitment and collaboration.
- The Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) promotes whole-school participation in physical activity with leadership pathways and professional learning.
- Participation in the Compass Music Festival, a regional performance opportunity for primary and secondary students in NSW public schools, run by The Arts Unit provides a chance for students to create music and perform in combined choirs, and be part of a musical extravaganza, without the cost of long-distance travel.
